This study investigated the effectiveness of a Spherical Video-based Virtual Reality (SVVR) interactive teaching model in strengthening nursing students’ clinical assessment competency and critical thinking disposition within a symptom management course. A quasi-experimental single-group pretest–posttest design was conducted with 94 first-year students enrolled in a two-year nursing program. Two SVVR modules were developed to simulate authentic clinical scenarios—dementia and dyspnea—integrated with standardized tools (Mini-Mental State Examination and Respiratory Distress Observation Scale) and implemented via the Uptale platform. Students first completed individual assessments in immersive VR and subsequently engaged in group analysis and peer feedback to consolidate clinical reasoning. Results demonstrated significant improvements in critical thinking disposition (p < .001 across all subscales) and nursing assessment performance (p = .006). The findings highlight SVVR as an innovative, student-centered pedagogical strategy that not only enhances clinical decision-making but also aligns with digital-native learners’ needs. This study provides practical insights into integrating immersive learning technologies into nursing curricula, contributing to broader discussions on advancing educational innovation and international development in health professions education.
